Vancouver’s art scene recently lit up with “Starry Witness”—a month-long immersive exhibition that invites visitors to “walk among the stars” by projecting hyper-realistic (starry nebulas) directly onto gallery floors and, after dark, onto city roads adjacent to the venue. At the heart of this celestial experience? Noparde’s specialized ground-projection technology, engineered to deliver crisp, vivid cosmic visuals even in challenging indoor and outdoor environments. This blog dives into the exhibition’s vision, how our projectors brought it to life, and the magic of its after-hours outdoor road display.
“Starry Witness”: An Exhibition Born from Cosmic Wonder
Curated by Vancouver-based artist Elena Marquez, “Starry Witness” was designed to bridge the gap between urban life and the vastness of the night sky—a response to the city’s light pollution, which often obscures real star visibility. The exhibition’s core concept? “Make the stars accessible to everyone, right where they walk.”
The show is split into two key experiences:
- Indoor Gallery Hall: A 1,200-square-meter exhibition space where visitors stroll across floors transformed by shifting nebulas—from the vibrant pinks of the Rosette Nebula to the deep blues of the Orion Nebula—paired with ambient soundscapes of distant space.
- After-Hours Outdoor Road Display: Each night from 8 PM to midnight, a 300-meter stretch of the pedestrian-only road outside the gallery is closed to traffic and turned into a “Starry Boulevard,” where ground projections extend the exhibition into the city, inviting passersby to step into a cosmic path.
“Our goal was to make astronomy feel tangible,” says Marquez. “You don’t need a telescope or a trip to the countryside—you just need to walk across a floor or a road, and suddenly you’re surrounded by the same nebulas that astronomers study. Noparde’s technology was the only way to make that realism possible.”
Noparde’s Projection Tech: The Engine Behind the Cosmic Visuals
To turn Marquez’s vision into reality, we needed projectors that could deliver three critical capabilities: ultra-high resolution for nebula detail, brightness that cuts through ambient light, and adaptability to both smooth gallery floors and rough road surfaces. We deployed two specialized projector models—custom-tuned for the exhibition’s unique needs:
1. Indoor Gallery: NP-G100 Ground Projection Projectors
For the gallery’s smooth, flat floors, we installed 12 units of our NP-G100 ground projectors—engineered for static, high-detail indoor displays. Key specs that made them ideal:
- Brightness & Contrast: 10,000 lumens of brightness and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Gallery lighting (soft, ambient LEDs) could have washed out dim projections, but the NP-G100’s brightness ensured nebulas remained vivid, while the high contrast made dark cosmic “voids” feel deep and immersive.
- Projection Mapping Integration: The projectors synced with Noparde’s proprietary mapping software to stitch 12 individual projections into a single, seamless 1,200-square-meter nebula landscape. This eliminated “seams” between projectors—critical for making visitors feel like they’re walking on one continuous cosmic surface.
2. Outdoor Road: NP-O80 Weatherproof Ground Projectors
The outdoor “Starry Boulevard” posed a bigger challenge: rough, uneven asphalt, variable night lighting (streetlights, nearby building lights), and potential rain (Vancouver’s typical evening weather). We deployed 8 units of our NP-O80 outdoor ground projectors—built for durability and adaptability:
- Weather Resistance: IP66-rated enclosure, with a corrosion-resistant aluminum body and waterproof cable glands. During the exhibition’s run, the projectors withstood 3 rainstorms, with no impact on performance.
- Brightness & Anti-Glare: 8,000 lumens of brightness, with a warm white (3000K) color temperature that cuts through streetlight glare. Unlike cool white light, warm white mimics the natural glow of stars, making the nebulas feel more authentic to the human eye.
The Magic of the Outdoor “Starry Boulevard”
Each night, as the sun sets, the NP-O80 projectors power on, turning the 300-meter road into a cosmic path. Here’s what makes the outdoor display stand out:
- Dynamic Movement: Unlike the static indoor nebulas, the outdoor projections include subtle, slow-moving effects—mimicking the gentle drift of nebulas in space (adjusted to 0.5x real speed, so visitors notice the movement without feeling disoriented). A passing car’s headlights might temporarily dim the projection, but the NP-O80’s auto-brightness adjustment kicks in within 0.3 seconds to restore visibility.
- Pedestrian Interaction: The road is closed to vehicles, so families, couples, and solo visitors walk, sit, or even lie down on the asphalt to stare at the “stars” below. Local photographers have called it “the most Instagrammable spot in Vancouver”—with posts featuring visitors “floating” above nebulas going viral.
Why This Collaboration Matters for Noparde
“Starry Witness” isn’t just an art exhibition—it’s a showcase of how projection technology can transform public spaces into immersive experiences. For Noparde, it validated two key strengths:
- Versatility: Our projectors don’t just work in one setting—they adapt to smooth galleries, rough roads, indoor light, and outdoor weather.
- Realism: When it comes to hyper-detailed visuals (like NASA nebula imagery), our high-res, high-contrast projectors ensure artists’ visions aren’t compromised.
As Marquez puts it: “I didn’t want the projections to feel like ‘screens on the ground.’ I wanted them to feel like portals to space. Noparde’s tech didn’t just meet that bar—it exceeded it. Visitors tell me they forget they’re in Vancouver—they feel like they’re walking on the edge of a nebula.”
